At Sweatt Shop Personal Training, when we design an athlete's sport- specific program one of the methods we use is periodization. Periodization is the systematic phasing together of different training variables to create a desired effect at a specific point in time-- like during championship meets.  When we design an athlete's sport-specific program, we must break the training year into phases, referred to as "pre-season", "in-season", and "transition".  For peak performance, the goals of each of these phases must be very specific, and training must be totally in tune with those goals as well. These plans can be yearly or even four years for an Olympic hopeful. At sweatt shop personal training we use the pendulum wave method followed by a delayed transformation phase. This was developed by the world famous Louie Simmons, owner of Westside barbell. When setting up a program, the following factors are some of the many we take into consideration:

  • The type of strength fitness required
  • The type of muscle contraction involved (isometric, concentric, eccentric)
  • The speed of movement over different phases of movement
  • The acceleration at critical points in the movement
  • The rest intervals between action in a given sport
  • The relative strength of agonists and antagonist, stabilizers and movers
  • The development of optimal static and dynamic range of movement
  • The strength deficit of given muscle groups
  • The training history of the individual
  • The injury history of the individual
  • The level of sports proficiency of the individual

We also use the conjugate system, which was developed by the extremely successful Olympic lifting team Dynamo club of the former Soviet Union. Many methods are combined in the conjugate system. Using these methods we will train five elements of strength:

  • Quickness
  • Explosiveness
  • Speed-strength
  • Strength-speed
  • Absolute strength

This allows an athlete to make continuous gains throughout the year. This makes a positive and exciting way to train helping us achieve proper mental state and environment for optimal gains. Any athlete who wants to be the best cannot afford an off season. These are just a couple of examples of the many methods we use here at Sweatt Shop. We design the workouts based on what the athlete needs for his or her sport.
